LAKHDAR BOUMEDIENE v. GEORGE W. BUSH, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Great news from the Supreme Court today!

The prisoners in Guantanamo Bay are going to be able to challenge their detainment in a courtroom.

That may not seem like that big of an allowance, being allowed to speak out against your detainment, to defend yourself against charges leveled at you, but that is exactly what we have been keeping from those men who are detained in Guantanamo Bay.

Before we get all upset... This decision does not allow the terrorists to win, go free, or openly communicate with other terrorists. All this is doing is allowing those who have been accused of very serious crimes to defend themselves in a court of law. These men are arguably the prisioners of a religious war, but many of them are guilty of horrendous crimes against this nation.

The problem is that we are only human. We make mistakes. In 2002 American soldiers tortured and killed a man named Dilawar. He was an Afghani taxi driver who was suspected of bombing American soldiers. After his death, an investigation showed that he was innocent.

This man died while in our custody, while being tortured by our soldiers. If he had not died of the wounds he sustained in Afghanistan, he would likely have been transfered to Guantanamo.

Do these men not deserve the right to defend themselves to the crimes they are charged with?

Sounds reasonable to me.
